When a jazz musician says "rhythm changes". it refers to the chord progression in the Gershwin classic. This is a common vehicle for bebop improvisation. Musicians like Charlie Parker created compositions of a type known as a "contrafact" so jazz musicians could copyright new melodies rather than credit Gershwin and have to pay royalties to his estate.Hence, these songs use "rhythm changes" but have original melodies!
