Cosmic Charley is an alternative psychedelic funk rock band out of Lethbridge, Alberta. Formed in 2010, the three-piece lineup features Nathan Kunkel on lead vocals and guitar, Thomas Bird on bass guitar and Tony Arsenault on drums. With live shows that burst with their trademark energy and three albums under their belt, they have managed to build a dedicated following in their hometown and beyond. Citing influences from artists such as the Arctic Monkeys, Radiohead, Alice in Chains and Muse, their sound has been compared to the Red Hot Chili Peppers meets the Clash meets the Police, and they are known for their funky bass lines and the musical twists and turns that await around every corner. They have played many sold out shows, headlined Lethbridge’s Bigwood Festival, and have opened for The Dudes and Pack A.D. Recently, they were chosen as the ‘Alberta Band of The Week’, during which they were featured on four major radio stations in Alberta, including their hometown station CJOC 106.7 FM.

Their newest release is a concept album titled The Bitterness of Men. Due to drop on October 17, 2015, it’s an eleven-track album that tells the story of Charley and his struggles as he returns from the war. With Nathan almost exclusively playing all the instruments, it’s a slight departure from their previous works, and offers a more theatrical overall feel, with one song flowing seamlessly into the next via musical segues. Nathan’s life has been filled with music since he was a child. He grew up singing in church, and bounces back and forth between piano, drums and guitar. He now devotes his life to raising his two children, and plays music when he can. He also hosted a radio show called Under the Raydar on CKXU 88.3 FM, and organizes the entertainment portion of CKXU’s Love and Records festival, the largest record collectors festival in western Canada.

When they’re not working hard or making music, Cosmic Charley loves to spend time in the great Canadian outdoors, – at least, when it’s not -30?. When it is, you’ll find them inside, hanging with the kids, playing video games and making the most out of every day.
