He sang folk and country with his family for radio programs from age 2 until he came down with polio in his 14th year, which caused him to lose the vocal range that he depended on to sing.

Developing interest in bass and jazz, he moved to L.A. in his late teens, joining Ornette Coleman to play music where a piece's harmony is intuitively negotiated by the band every time it's played.
