Taarab is a music genre popular in Tanzania and Kenya. It is influenced by the musical traditions of the African Great Lakes, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Indian subcontinent. Taarab incorporates elements from Swahili, Arabic, Indian, Egyptian, and other cultures. This can be seen in the range of instruments which include Middle Eastern oud and dumbek, Indian tabla, western electric keyboards, and the Japanese taishokoto.
