Wightwold takes place in Foundermeer, a dark, isolated, gaslit Gormenghastian country where people lock their doors and shutter their windows by nightfall, for eldritch monsters called wights emerge after sundown. These creatures are so perilous to ordinary folk they are hunted only by Ginterghasts, strange traveling outcasts-turned-heroes who are said to be part wight themselves.
