Rookie Mistakes

Most of the bands you've come to know and love came on strong & early with memorable debut singles and albums. You would be surprised, though, how many now-legendary artists started off - well - not so hot.

Too much too soon? Bad management or production choices? Just weren't ready yet? You make the call.

Oh, I like the first U2 album. Somewhere between PiL and David Gilmour.

A lot of these were self-inflicted, others it's a bad producer. The self-inflicted ones were mostly chasing trends instead of trying to be unique. Luckily they all figured it out!

Very interesting to hear how they started out. I guess they had to start somewhere... agreed on your comment on Madonna's Everybody. It was always my least favorite song of hers. Personally, I think MTV saved her with the "Borderline" video.

I always thought U2 started out pretty badly as well, in the very early days.

Some of the artists on this list weren't so bad at the beginning, just perhaps misguided? Anyway, good mix!

@depechemode27 - Everybody was recorded and released several months before Madonna's debut album. It's really uninteresting compared to the material that was to come - barely distinguishable from a lot of the other dreck hit singles of the day and not at all memorable on its own terms. Plus the record company didn't even have confidence in her as a visual artist yet if you can imagine that, not even putting her picture on the single's sleeve. If it weren't for Holiday / Borderline, Everybody probably would have been both the start and finish of her recording career.

Madonna really? I actually like her earlier stuff WAY better than the later.
