Some of my (grand)parents' vinyl and tape tunes I used to listen to as a little boy. One of dad's favourite radio broadcasts he often recorded was Oldies nach Wunsch ("Oldies by request"). It had the opener as theme. A gr8 jukebox including Édith Piaf, Harry Belafonte, Manfred Mann & Frank Sinatra. Good memories! Inspired by @sidekick's http://8tracks.com/sidekick/you-can-choose-your-friends following this journey into the past. Cover picture: Berlin beer garden, ca. 1935.

@cactusdoink: ears wide wide open, right? Kraftwerk AND Truck Stop - *mwahaha that would be even weirder than the "12 Golden Country Greats" by Ween... ;) But now, I've to listen to that tune again (anyway, it's about a trucker who wants to listen to some country songs by Dave Dudley, Hank Snow or Charlie Pride)... A still even more interesting thing is that they mention a certain "Gunter G.", probably a reminiscence to the guy who performs the previous track about a truck driver on his way to Lisbon - and getting betrayed by his wife in the meantime. In real life Gunter is more famous for being an alcoholic and being broke most of the time, but for driving drunk or beating his own wife as well - and for making fun of East German people whom he considers even more degenerated than himself. His last album was kinda Johnny Cash American Recordings rip-off (for instance there's a German cover of Radiohead's "Creep" on it). White line fever tracks like the ones we got here actually seemed to be very popular in Germany in the late '70s.
