In the early 1940s, there was a jazz club in Harlem. While most of the country was focused on big orchestras playing swing music, this club offered free meals and drinks to any musicians willing to come in and jam. These sessions often lasted until dawn.
The club was called Minton's Playhouse. It was the birthplace of bebop and jazz combos as we know them today. Regulars included Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, and Dizzy Gillespie.
