The term "protest song" was coined in the 1960s when artists in the United States began protesting the Vietnam War through their music. However, long before the 1960s music has been challenging injustices and bringing to light political issues and movements. Music became the means to bring about social change, anthems to unite those victimized and suppressed, and challenges to the government status quo.
