1939 was a tough year with dark clouds ahead. Music and dancing remained swinging, no matter what. 8 tracks from 1939 that are just right for some balboa.
photo: Jitterbug Dance Contest
Los Angeles, view of part of the dancing area in Los Angeles as more than 1,000 jitterbugs representing 22 states and six foreign countries, went to town during the contest to pick the champion rug-cutters. The famed swing bands of Artie Shaw and Ken Baker supplied the hot licks.

TomCat Special Edition Jazz Mix: Summertime Or Another

TomCat longs for summer days spent basking in the sun. The background music? George Gershwin's aria from Porgy and Bess, a favorite of jazz artists since 1935. With lyrics by DuBose Heyward (author of the novel Porgy on which the opera was based) "Summertime" has been covered more than 25,000 times by instrumentalists, vocalists, big bands, small combos, country heroes, pop stars, and rock icons. Here the focus is on recordings that infuse the melody with blues feel. It's a potent combination.

I have decided that it is impossible to make my favourite instrument look pretty. Seriously, try Googling it.
However, it does sound amazing, and here's a playlist proving it. 13 Tracks: Classical concerti and solos, duets, jazz solos and wind band pieces. Includes performances by Artie Shaw, Ernst Ottensamer and the Budapest Clarinet Quintet. Ends with Rhapsody in Blue, because no clarinet collection should ignore that insane slide.

It's past midnight and the city has finally slowed down. You're the last decent private eye in the city, only a few days away from an early retirement. As you make your way home through the dark gloomy side streets you hear a female voice behind you: got a light? Your inner voice says "keep on walking", but your body curiously turns around, knowing retirement will have to wait a little longer. (35 tracks of mystery & sexiness)
