TomCat longs for summer days spent basking in the sun. The background music? George Gershwin's aria from Porgy and Bess, a favorite of jazz artists since 1935. With lyrics by DuBose Heyward (author of the novel Porgy on which the opera was based) "Summertime" has been covered more than 25,000 times by instrumentalists, vocalists, big bands, small combos, country heroes, pop stars, and rock icons. Here the focus is on recordings that infuse the melody with blues feel. It's a potent combination.
