According to Genius.com, the use of the word “plebeian” (lacking in refinement), kept the song from being recorded during the early 50s. Columbia Records chief Mitch Miller believed that general audiences lacked the refinement to understand such advanced vocabulary. It seems he thought they were too plebeian for “plebeian”.
