The mystery was just a front, she realized. Annie, her lovers, and her children were not driving miles from home to solve a riddle that had no ties to them. No, it was much more than that. They were afraid. They were fleeing, at least for the moment, from their only friends, the people they had trusted two weeks prior.
It was just her and her family. That weary, misshapen, battle-scarred family. That's all that mattered.
