Stan Getz (Stanley Gayetzky, February 2, 1927 Philadelphia – June 6, 1991 Malibu, California) was an American jazz tenor saxophone player. Known as "The Sound" because of his warm, lyrical tone, Getz's prime influence was the wispy, mellow tone of his idol, Lester Young. Joao Gilberto is considered one of the fathers of the Brazilian style known as Bossa Nova, together with one of the most prolific Brazilian composers of the 20th century, the 'other' father of Bossa Nova, Antonio Carlos Jobim. Gilberto developed the guitar strumming style for Bossa that was loved and adopted by the musicians of that movement.
