The nurses call the Arkhams machines, unthinking coglike devils and when their whispers echo through the parks that surround the Windham, the nurses lock the doors and shut the blinds and try to distract the children in any way they can.

Joseph peeks through the curtains then, watches the hole in their face emit a beam of light, like a flashlight, and they dance, on glass limbs spindly and fragile. They never stop whispering.
