Notes
The process of ‘learning’ how to effectively operate within a new cultural environment by ‘adapting’ to (and not adopting) its common practices. It does not imply the loss or rejection of any ‘original’ cultural references. An immigrant to Canada who learns to speak English or French in order to participate within the established infrastructure of society might be said to be ‘acculturated’, however still practices his/her own cultural particularities.
