As someone who grew up with a Italian grand-mother who had to suffer from xenophobia through her childhood, Italy has been both obvious and not. Not that it was denied, but my grand-mother has always been so anxious to “fit in” that it was just not acknowledged.
It took my father time to come to terms with it and, funnily enough, it's for me (who has less blood-connection with it) that Italy seems more like a part of my identity. Like something which has been there all along.
