it's not that mello is stupid, or suicidal. he doesn't take unnecessary risks, but his scale of what is necessary and acceptable isn't the same as an ordinary person's. (why should it be. he isn't ordinary. far from it.) in mello's mind, everything is potentially useful, a tool in his hands to use toward achieving an objective, and that includes his own body. it's an important tool, but a tool all the same.
