I wish there was an easier method, but I just basically listen to everything I stumble upon. Usually, I visit music blogs/sites (like pitchfork, under the radar, NPR, etc) and see what's out there, then read interviews about people's influences. also lists with the best albums of the year, every year. 8tracks made me get to know a lot of new stuff also :)
