Inside the Britpop bubble (1993-1996)

Britpop is not a generic label for all British pop but a musical subgenre that emerged from the British indie scene in the early 1990s. The movement developed as a reaction against the trends in the late 80s and early 90s, particularly US grunge. Its emphasis on catchy songs provided a much needed alternative.

Britpop’s direct ancestors were the alt rock acts from the 1980s and early 90s, with The Smiths and the Madchester scene (Stone Roses, Happy Mondays) being particularly influential.
