In all that mess, you might have been forgiven for missing it. But it was there. Lying forgotten among the other rubbish. Its colour had been scorched in places, and the gold filigree was cracked. A large, old-fashioned key, the kind with curls and a bit of red ribbon tied to the end, was jammed in the front and bent at an odd angle. It still resembled a human heart. Not a cartoonish heart with two great curving lobes, the sort which children draw in bright pink, or which you see plastered all over cards, but the sort of heart that sits on a stand in an anatomy classroom, with the red and blue blood vessels sticking out of the top in a cluster. It resembled one of these, but it did not look exactly like it.
