What was Hermann to do? His own friend seemed a Judas, a demon- he didn't know him anymore, but he still loved who Newton used to be. There was too much for him to process, too many feelings of betrayal. The Precursor influenced Newt's actions long before the cataclysm, and putting together the pieces was more painful than the experience that broke him.

Newton wasn't in control, and he would not be for some time. What lived in his place instead was a Precursor, and it grappled with wailing emanating from where it had stuffed the carcass of his consciousness. Perhaps Newt would carve a path back to the surface, and perhaps the sun would rise, but not before one or the other's demise.
