Phobos, the larger of Mars's two moons, was discovered in August 1877 by Asaph Hall. Its main features are its irregular shape, exaggerated by its large impact crater, and also its very close orbit to Mars. At 6,000 miles its orbit is closer to its host planet than that of any other moon in our solar system. Some experts even believe that due to its close orbit, Phobos is slowly spiraling towards Mars and will eventually either crash into Mars or be torn apart by gravitational forces, creating a ring around Mars much like the rings around Saturn.
