Found Music | A Mixtape by Bárbara Perea

Notes

About a year ago, a widowed and elderly neighbour decided to discard her late husband's large vinyl collection, which I recovered. This brief selection of tracks from his collection, reflects both his tastes and mine, and is mostly made up of 1940's music available in Mexico, but extends to the 1980's, with some choice and even sometimes handmade cover art.

Found music is a playlist commissioned by the Visual Art Center in Austin, Texas for their Boombox project, but more than a playlist it became a project that took on a life of its own. About a year ago, a widowed and elderly neighbour decided to discard her late husband's large vinyl collection, which I recovered. It sat in my livingroom for about a year, until I was commissioned to put together this playlist, when I finally got hold of a turntable and took a plunge into the collection and history of my unknown neighbour. This brief selection of tracks from his collection, which I digitalized, but otherwise did not alter, reflects both his tastes and mine, and is mostly made up of 1940's music available in Mexico, but extends to the 1980's, with some choice and even sometimes handmade cover art. I love Mariachi music, or so I discovered in my mid twenties, so if the mix leans heavily towards that genre, that is one of the reasons, but it is also my own homage to Sebastián de la Cruz and The Spurs. The collection also had a large selection of military marches, so don't miss the beautiful albeit brief, Marcha Dragona. Amongst many rarities in this collection, I found a Test Record, which starts and closes the mix. I also enjoy tango, so I've included Carlos Gardel, of course, and a few choice and bizarre covers, that are sort of the history of appropriated music in Mexico. Hope you enjoy the priceless version of Jesus Christ Superstar in Mariachi, and a few other sounds calculated to cause mirth and nostalgia for eras gone by....
