Okita falls in love with Kondou quickly when he realizes there IS a man out there who is truly kind and cares about him. But he doesn't want to confess his feelings out of fear of messing up what they have, and because he doesn't think he has anything to offer beyond being Kondou’s sword. He's happy just remaining by Kondou's side. His love causes him to kill to protect Kondou, something that Okita both regrets (because it makes Kondou sad) but also doesn't regret (because it protects him).

But nothing can remain stable forever. Okita becomes stricken with tuberculosis and Kondou gets shot. Enraged, Okita becomes a fury but is unable to change anything. Kondou becomes executed for the sake of the Shinsengumi and Okita dies protecting Kondou's ideals.
