An unnamed heroine, plagued by a debilitating illness, is sent away on holiday in France to recuperate. There she meets Cellini, a handsome Italian artist who exerts a strange but positive spiritual influence over her. Cellini directs her to a healer named Heliobas, a mysterious foreigner who uses a wild combination of Christian mysticism, exotic drugs, and electricity to cure his patients, which include himself, his preternaturally youthful sister Zara, and a hot-headed Russian prince named Ivan.
