Looking Back at 5 Bat-Crazy Years of American Horror Story

It's that time of year again when a new season of American Horror Story has just dropped and we're having the usual combination of feelings about it: ravenous excitement and extreme hesitation. We can't wait to see what they come up with for the rest of Season 6, but we're also very nervous about what kind of crazy shenanigans they're going to pull to top themselves. If past seasons are any indication it's going to be utterly bananas, which is obviously why we're going to keep watching it. Let's take a look back at the past 5 seasons, along with some playlists made by AHS fans on 8tracks:

Season 1: Murder House

It feels pretty weird to say that the season with a school shooting and a ghost in a gimp suit going around impregnating people is the most tame storyline to date, but that's kind of the case here. Murder House introduced American Horror Story to the world as a show that was not messing around even a little bit when it came to insanity, and set a high benchmark as far as how they were going to top it.

Season 2: Asylum

For their second season they started shoveling a little more coal into the crazy train. They gave us a demon-possessed nun, a breast-feeding serial killer, a murderous Santa Claus, a subplot in which one of the asylum's patients turns out to be an adult Ann Frank (or maybe not? Still kinda unclear on that one). All for our entertainment. God help us.

If you've ever watched a Kathy Bates performance and wondered what it would be like if it was just her severed head talking, we're scared of you but also recommend you check out this season. It's got everything: witches, tons of death and reincarnation (because witches), and Stevie Nicks (who turns out to be a witch).

Season 4: Freakshow

Clowns are already scary. That's not a radical opinion. But why make a clown that's wearing another person's face as a mask because he's missing the bottom half of his own face? That's what the psychos who make this show did. Other highlights include Lobster Boy, a two-headed woman, and musical numbers set to Nirvana and Lana Del Rey songs. Sure, why not? We're still along for the ride.

Season 5: Hotel

You just had to know that Lady Gaga showing up was going to crazy up the joint even more for this one. It's got ghosts and the usual stuff (even a flashback to some of the ghosts from Murder House) as well as vampires, a serial killer dinner party (ft. Dahmer, Gacy, the Zodiac Killer, etc.), and a demon wearing a strap on. Wholesome fun as usual.
