Music is essential to productivity. And while the jury’s still out on whether listening to music while studying or working actually hinders or helps our ability to focus, there’s widespread agreement among researchers that it makes us feel happier and, therefore, more inclined to do work, whatever the task may be.

But like most situations in life, there’s not a one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to music and productivity. It’s a matter of having the right tool for the job.

Looking to kickstart a new fitness regimen? Queue up some workout music, and you’ve basically got a pocket-sized personal trainer to go.

Need to clean your whole house, do three loads of laundry, go grocery shopping, and prepare dinner for your extended family today? A bit of dance or pop music blasting through your speakers will make it seem like some fairy godmother just swooped in and reset your entire life with an effortless wave of her wand.

For brainwork, however, things get a bit trickier. To make sure you’re getting the most out of your thinky bits when it really matters, there are a few things to keep in mind:

-Lyrics can be a distraction. So, be sure to have plenty of instrumental music on hand.

-Classical music is often prescribed for focus, but electronic music--especially ambient or chill--offers a nice alternative with many of the same benefits.

-Above all, familiarity is the best way to avoid distraction. So, why not gather up 8 (or more) of your favorite songs and make your very own productivity playlist on 8tracks today?!
