Elizabeth Gaskell's novel, which details the cultural divide between the industrial North and the quiet South, has plenty of things to chew on: romance, social commentary, strikes, riots, proposals, and overbearing mothers (see song #9). But at the forefront of the novel - and the recent BBC miniseries - is the tumultuous relationship between Margaret Hale and John Thornton.
