Collected 2016-Q2

Notes

Music collected April through June, 2016. I am the eye in the sky looking at you. I can read your mind. I am the maker of rules dealing with fools. I can cheat you blind, and I don't need to see anymore to know that I can read your mind.

Yes! Here's a willow tree; click through your camera to hear Grandaddy's "Underneath the Weeping Willow." Also, the Kevin Morby is growing on me. I've probably listened to it about 15 times now, and both times I listened to it on your mix, I had the sensation of a slow build to one of the best 18-second bits of 2016: 2:55-3:13, after the disgusting sax-faced interlude, the word "destroyer" sung in call/repeat fashion. I'll have to give the Morby album a few more spins! I had totally forgotten about "The Stomach of the Earth" from the Teen Suicide album -- when I've gone back to listen, I usually throw on "Pavement" or "It's Just a Pop Song"; I had forgotten about the beat.loop-driven stuff. Now that I'm listening again, I'm surprised that the Panda Bearish "I Don't Think It's Too Late" didn't stand out to me during the first run through. It's easy to get lost in a 26-track album, I guess.

I'm surprised I beat you to this. Terry Jacks is intriguing. I love the very old looking Canadian pop music website. People will be paying good money to have a site like that in the near future. But it'll have a weird augmented reality layer of some sort to keeper everyone

Holy hell, what is the Poppy Family? This is AM gold + genuine freakiness, and you're telling me it comes from the blissed-out mind of Terry "Seasons in the Sun" Jacks?! The Carpenters on acid? What a dig! Someone needs to make a documentary/write a book about great Canadian mainstream that didn't cross the border. Until then, I'll just have to slog my way through http://jam.canoe.com/Music/Pop_Encyclopedia/ to find the true nuggets.

@danedespres First! Man, I thought for sure you'd already made your way to the Poppy Family. That canoe site's old design is strong indicator that it contains some legitimate, under-the-radar information. I would definitely watch that documentary.
