'78
Today, I listen to Gui Boratto and Deadmau5. Ten years ago, I listened to Paul van Dyk and Daft Punk. Twenty years ago, I listened to New Order and Ministry. But thirty years ago...quite a bit different. A few songs surfaced, vaguely, in my mind this morning (Driver's Seat, Strange Way and Hot Blooded). Turns out, they were all from 1978, so I rounded out a mix with other favorites from that year. So long ago.

Chicks who rocked
Eight tracks of 70s and 80s rock. By chicks who rocked, including Heart, Pat Benatar and Stevie Nicks. I saw Stevie Nicks at Jones Beach this summer and "Edge of Seventeen" was still pretty amazing. Bongos for 10 minutes, then that guitar riff on top for another 5 before Stevie strolled up with "Just like the white-winged dove..."

Now It's Dark
As Frank Booth loved to say, c. 1986. In college, I wrote a long paper analyzing this film, which critics regard as the 2nd best of the 1980s (after Raging Bull). Eight dark tracks of various genres.

Favorite tracks from top classic rock artists
These are my favorite tracks from (arguably) the best artists of the classic rock era. Well, okay, maybe not Journey and Supertramp.

Easy listenin' in the Carter era
Eight tracks of light rock from 1976-79, including 10cc, Climax Blues Band and Little River Band. There's some favorites here about which I really ought to be more embarrassed. AM dial nostalgia, baby.

Tracks from the back
My parents drove a Mercury Monarch in the 1970s. I sat in the back and frequently got carsick. Here's some of the stuff I listened to en route to Pekin or Peoria or an exotic holiday destination (like Iowa).

The Summer of 83
I was 13, and it was a great summer for pop music: Michael Jackson still looked like a normal person, Prince had yet to become a symbol, and European synthpop played in Peoria.

Fall favorites 2006
What I listened to almost daily last fall, in my new place in Lower Nob, or Tendernob, or Tenderloin Heights. I discovered most of the music on The Hype Machine (hypem.com), which rocks. No particular genre theme here, just music I like, most of it new or new-ish, with the occasional cover and mash-up of older tracks thrown in.

A Night at the Gallery
The best destination in London for hard house and trance in 1996-98 was Friday nights at the Gallery at Turnmills in Clerkenwell. Big anthematic choons, admittedly, but great times.
