u know the kind of song that makes u feel a weird kind of pain in your stomach every fucking time, no matter how often you've heard it? but it feels kinda good?
songs by Nicole Dollanganger, Chris Garneau & The National, some of them depressing, disturbing, or even masochistic.

but i feel that sometimes listening to the saddest song u know is just necessary, can even be more comforting than forcing urself to listen to happier music u cannot even relate to in that moment. every pain you ever felt is still in these songs, and it's okay to let them out sometimes, let them float around like ghosts, growing and surrounding you with echos of your own memories, and then the song ends, and so do they.
