Notes
Punk was no less a fully-developed subculture than that of the hippies or the beatniks. Its expressions include (but are not limited to) fashion, critical theory, visual arts, and, of course, music. In regards to music, punk made its first appearance in the mid-1960s, back then in the form of garage rock. The scene became extremely popular in Britain and the U.S. between the late 1970s and early 1980s. Bars and concert venues, such as the legendary CBGB, became the hottest spots in town for over two decades, and gave us bands like the Ramones, and the Patti Smith Group. This is just a taste of what this hugely prolific and devilishly fun subculture sounded like.
