Deborah LaChance is the middle child and only daughter of the LaChance family. Growing up, her and her older brother Denny always looked after Gordie, their younger brother. When Denny is killed in the spring of 1959, the whole family is at loss. In their grief, the neglect over Gordie from their parents seem to worsen, and Deborah's relationship with them is severed even further, especially with their father. During the summer of 1959, Deborah is suffering with the loss of her older brother, attempting to take care of her young brother, and keep her life intact.
