the foil (companion/sidekick): can play many roles, but they often serve as a contrast to the main character. if the lead is somewhat self-centered, oblivious, and careless, then the foil will be compassionate, intelligent, and logical. foils are often used to develop multiple characters and can be a source of plucky comic relief.
