Azzah and her sister are the guardians of the the Emperor's heir and his private home, one he asks them to always guard. One day someone comes in and slaughters everyone, including the heir. In trying to defend the home Azzah is seriously injured and her sister is killed. She escapes, but at the cost of her sanity who fled with her sister. It returns when she is set upon by an Unclean child named Talei. The Unclean are people with strange markings, looked down upon by the general populace. At first, Azzah wants nothing to do with her, but with nothing else to do, she agrees to take the recently orphaned child up north, to a place Talei has only heard about in her bedtime stories.
