A man has spent the last twenty years at war. The novel starts with him at the funeral of his best friend who was killed beside him. The funeral is in Hawaii, and during and after the funeral he feels a calling to walk away from his old life and start over in the islands. The story is built around finding himself as a man apart from the warrior, building relationships with people he meets, exploring the islands, finding someone who can love him for who he is, and coming to peace with his torn spirit.
