While working in a very small town in northern Minnesota, an unlucky waitress goes searching for a missing boy after the local sheriff and co. seem to be discouraging the investigation. The protagonist discovers that a child has gone missing every five years since the town was founded, and the locals are in on it. On her search for the missing boys, she discovers North America's Fearsome Critters, the town's sordid history and folklore, an isolated alcoholic who may know the boy's location (unless he is the kidnapper), and a paralyzed hermit who attempted to recover a missing child 25 years ago and failed.
