Decades before the story takes place in the fantasy kingdom of Quaerimo, the kingdom’s queen at the time came up with a competition to choose the next ruler-- whoever did the most valorous deeds would be crowned. From there things grew more sophisticated. Those seeking to become ruler hire a scribe to record their every action. The writing is sent to valor readers who then choose the next ruler.

Alcandre, prideful and perfectionist, hires such a scribe and sets out to be the most valorous. Eventually she is forced to meet up with another seeker, Malo. Together, with their scribes, they band to take on an organization the kingdom has long since given up on defeating-- Rainfall, the only people who have even a remote interest in science.
