At the moment, I am writing my dissertation; I am studying the impacts of migration on the food habits of a transnational community (Villachuato, México – Marshalltown, Iowa). I received funding from the Butler Travel Fund in 2010 to do part of my fieldwork in Villachuato, Mexico—this was a personal and professional achievement because this was the first time that the prize was awarded to a research project being conducted in Mexico (typically it only funds research that takes place in Africa).
Additionally, in my campus activities, I have also tried to find ways to include what I have learned through my courses and in my work as a research assistant. I believe that by having more events on campus focused on the improvement and empowerment of Latino students at Iowa State, the larger university benefits, because students have more opportunities to appreciate the importance of diversity, multiculturalism and tolerance.
