the story of laertes and his family is the real tragedy in this story. he went away for a week and came back to find his dad dead and his sister mad and dead shortly thereafter.
he's protective of his sister to the point of fault. he is conflicted because he doesn't really want to be around his father, but wishes he could look out for ophelia. he's bitter because of the class difference between hamlet's family and his own, because he sees what he can't have on a daily basis.
