On Christmas Eve 1914, Germans and Englishmen who 24 hours before were destroyed at the point of artillery, decided to make an unofficial truce, without authorization from the high commands. The Germans began to sing in their trenches "Night of peace" and the English responded by singing Christmas carols from their country. Soon after, the Germans came out of their holes and shouted "Merry Christmas!" In English. The British received them with handshakes. They exchanged cigarettes and whiskey. Even, the legend tells that in some places they even played soccer games.

Two days later they resumed the war. But for 48 hours, the men were able to lay down their weapons and be brothers.
