From Beirut to the Balkan Gypsies

I agree with what all of you have said about "Sa Le Roma" and was kind of taken aback when I heard it as well. I know the original tune is a folk song of the Balkans and I'm not sure exactly where it originated, but it's called "Gergiovden" or "Sveti GeorgI" in Bulgaria.

this is my go-to baking mix? i'm not sure why but whenever i turn on my oven i turn on this mix haha. thanks!

Hi,

"I was surprised as you when I heard the song "Sa Le Roma" it is almost the same as the tune from the movie "Le Temps Des Gitans". The movie was out in 1990, while the record with "Sa Le Roma" release in 1998. I wonder which came first."

This is a Romani folk song from the Balkans... in fact there was some controversy over it because Goran Bregović initially claimed that he composed it for the movie, even though he only arranged it. (This is actually one of the *less* controversial Bregović compositions, because he also claimed songs composed by other people - as opposed to folk songs - as his own... I think he specifically had to recant on a Bajramović song and list him as co-author in subsequent releases...? I'm not sure)

Anyway, this song became popular in *Hungary* (so not in the former Yugoslavian countries where it's originally from) only after the movie. Several Romani folk bands made their own versions. This one is also cool:

You can buy it here for like 50 cents:

(I have ZERO idea how to switch the interface over to English. Maybe there is no English version?! *sigh*)

BTW this song is quite popular in Hungary. The winner of Hungarian Idol 2006 sung Hungarian and Serbian versions... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImAmY2ufGdg
(Her mom translated it to Hungarian! :) )

I hope this was sufficiently informative!

BTW I was pleasantly surprised by the mix itself, I really HATE Csókolom so I was hesitant to listen to it :p But the other tracks were great and it even had one of my favorites!

I will put some more music of that type.
