A twig snapped. “What was that?” He swung his flashlight toward the sound and, just feet away, a pair of bright frightened eyes stared back at him.

“It's just a deer.” Jack whispered.

They slowly moved past it.

Then, looming over them like the skeleton of a once great obelisk, was the fire tower...

A sign was nailed to the fire tower. Wren shined his light on it and read it out loud, “ 'Mountaintop fire tower, erected 1937.' Dude, this thing's over 75 years old.”

“When have you ever heard of anything recently built being haunted?” Jack scanned the perimeter of the clearing for more deer but found only darkness.
