Notes
Discovered in 1785 by William Herschel, the Antennae Galaxies are a merging pair of galaxies [NGC 4038 and 4039] in the constellation Corvus approximately 63 million light years from earth. The system's name is derived from the tidal tails that formed in the collision, which resemble an insect's antennae. When galaxies collide, the forces of nature pull hydrogen gas to the core of the collision, rapidly compressing until shock waves trigger star formation, shining bright blue. Astronomers estimate only about 10% of the newborn superstar clusters created in the collision will stick around for any longer than 10 million years.
