In order to preserve it, people have been asked not to feel; they are only permitted their place in society by renouncing certain emotions (anger, lust, greed & ambition, et cetra, as they are linked to conflict). Criminals and emotioally-strong citizens are compounded for life in the Sin Rooms. When a humble librarian & his friend are kidnapped & taken their, their once calm views of the world are turned upside down. They experience the true extremes of the human condition & realise the life they've been living was no life at all.
