when the fox went to hunt, a star fell from the night & landed in her eye. the wolf heard her cries in the Beyond & went to her side. together, they put back the stars that fell back into the sky. the night was whole again.

but when she looked back, she found the wolf had left in search of his pack. but he had left his tail behind, chewed off & twined with hers.

the fox knew the wolf’s secret: he had placed the moon & stars & felled it in his pride, & it was the fox that put each star back.
