Arecibo II

Notes

1963 is a year remembered for many reasons. It was a year when Russia sent Valentina V. Tereshkova to orbit to become the first woman in space, and among a flood of historical moments including Martin Luther King Jr's most famous speech, something new was ascending beyond the horizon in the karst hills of Arecibo, Puerto Rico...A giant 305m (1000 foot) radio telescope was ascending to begin its mission to expand our understanding of the universe and facilitate humanity's curiosity for decades. It may have been metal and concrete by design, but by its very nature it was an extension of what makes us human, and its legacy will live on forever in many forms, but perhaps most importantly, in how it inspired generations to be curious and persevere through whatever challenges life may present.
