Everyone enjoys hearing a familiar tune by the original artist. But once that hit is out there dozens of other versions surface. Originally these "cover versions" were designed to try to steal some of the thunder while the original was still popular. The came dozens of other recordings of the hit tune, often years later, that were designed to engage a younger audience.
Still other versions of hit tunes became part of background music packages. Or perhaps an artist from one genre -- say jazz -- felt that something new and different could be accomplished by covering a song from another type of music -- for instance, rock 'n' roll.
