Imagine for a second that we celebrated a holiday that glorified a person from history as being some sort of trailblazing hero when in reality that person was a genocidal maniac who, if he had his way, would have eradicated or enslaved an entire group of human beings. That would be crazy, right?

Anyway, today is Columbus Day, and while we’re excited for just about any holiday, we can’t help but feeling like we should celebrate something a that isn’t so gruesome and objectionable. Luckily, there is an alternative: Indigenous Peoples’ Day!

That’s right - we can celebrate our country’s history and heritage by honoring the culture of the people who came before us, not the psycho who murdered so many of them. To do that, we’ve collected some of the finest 8tracks playlists showcasing both the traditional and contemporary music of American Indians. They represent a culture whose contributions, though we may not engage with them too often, are still a vital part of the American cultural identity.
