Betsu Ni begins late in the manga series in classic tsundere trope territory. By track 6, they've graduated and Akane moves away from the Tendos to college goals she's convinced herself to go for. Distance is liberating but lonely; Akane has a few short flings (they don't feel right) and lots of friends. Ranma has neither, focusing on the task of teaching new students of Anything Goes.

Months creep by. Loneliness turns to poorly disguised longing. Akane comes back for winter break. Nabiki presents them with an expenses-paid weekend at a mountain inn: No suitors, no fiancées, no interruptions. Ranma and Akane have an entire weekend alone just to talk. Is it too good to last?
